Press Club’s soft approach to fishermen violence

Journalists who were harassed during last Monday’s protest by Maltese fishermen found little consolation in the press release issued by the Malta Press Club in their support.

Instead of out rightly condemning the incidents the Press Club ‘insisted’ with the Fishing Co-operative to ensure that similar incidents do not repeat themselves in the future.

During the protest a number of journalists and press photographers were threatened by the fishermen and in some cases manhandled by the crowd.

The Press Club expressed its hope that the Co-operative truly felt sorry for the incidents that occurred. The Press Club added that the Co-operative should make sure that in the future journalists would be able to carry out their work in the public interest.
