MITTS playing active role in e-government development

"Malta Information Technology and Training Services Ltd, formerly the Management Systems Unit, has been one of the agents of change which catalysed the transformation of the Public Service – both in terms of the institutional framework as well as the introduction of Information Technology as an instrument of change."

Prime Minister Eddie Fenech Adami said this during his speech, last Friday, at the official launch of the celebrations programme for the 10th Anniversary of the inception of MITTS.

The Prime Minister also announced that a draft Electronic Commerce Bill and Data Protection Bill has been submitted to Parliament for a Second Reading, and that amendments to the Criminal Code relating to computer abuse have been submitted to Parliament for consideration. The emphasis on electronic commerce and service was further highlighted earlier last week, with the introduction of e-government, where, the Prime Minister said, he was confident that MITTS would play a leading role.

As part of its 10th anniversary celebrations, MITTS, which now employs 300 Maltese workers, will be hosting an exhibition focusing on the development of Information Technology during the past decade.

MITTS has been instrumental in the promotion, deployment and exploitation of IT products and services in Malta, aiming to develop, and disseminate information technology to increase competitiveness within the global marketplace.

Dr Fenech Adami also said that in the past decade there has been an investment of over Lm50 million in IT infrastructure and skills base in the Public Service.

"The last 10 years have seen an infusion of over 4,500 PCs across the Public Service and a further 4,500 in state schools," he added.

During his speech at the ceremony, Mr J. R. Grima, MITTS Chairman, said that although the relationship between the Public Service and MITTS was not always easy, it had matured into one of mutual respect. He said that together with the support of MITTS, the Public Service has state-of-the-art IT infrastructure, which smoothly connects all Government departments and Ministries as well as Local Councils.
