Hiccups in short message launch
The short message was that Vodafone had some teething problems with its SMS service, as the mobile telecoms company admitted. The Business Times received reports from some Vodafone etalk customers who applied for the SMS (Short Message Service) and had the Lm1 fee deducted from their account, while no service was assigned to the particular mobile phone. Some etalk subscribers also received a test message saying that their SMS time-window was extended by seven days, when they hadnt requested the service. When contacted, Vodafone spokesperson, Koren Borges, confirmed the reports, adding that the company had manually activated the SMS facility for those customers who applied for the service, but did not receive it. However, Ms Borges also stressed that the software problem which caused the hiccup had now been corrected and was no longer an issue and would not affect the subscribers of the very popular GSM service. She added that clients were not charged unless they dialled 09636363 for the service, even in cases where clients received the service without dialling. "One customer insisted that he did not request the SMS service, but had his account deducted by Lm1, however, when Vodafone researched the clients call records, these confirmed that he had called the number for the service," she said. | |||||||||
