June imports slide 22.7%, industrial supplies down 40%

The National Statistics office reports that in June this year, total imports declined by Lm30.5 million, or 22.7 per cent, to Lm104.1 million - from Lm134.6 million during the same month last year.
The importation of industrial supplies declined by Lm27.6 million or 33.9 per cent to Lm53.9 million from Lm81.5 million a year earlier. Imports of capital goods were down by Lm4.7 million to Lm18.0 million from Lm22.7 million last year. At the same time, the importation of Consumer Goods increased by Lm1.8 million to Lm22.2 million from Lm20.4 million last year. Meanwhile, at Lm10 million, the importation of fuel and lubricants was at the same level as last year.
In the month under review, total exports went down by Lm8.8 million or 9.9 per cent to Lm80.3 million from Lm89.1 million in the same month last year. While domestic exports were down by Lm9 million to Lm71.4 million, re-exports increased marginally to Lm8.9 million.
Meanwhile, the NSO reports that, in the first six months of this year, total imports were down by Lm136.4 million or 19.2 per cent to Lm573.5 million from Lm709.9 million in the same period last year.
The importation of industrial supplies shrunk by Lm112.7 million, or 27.8 per cent, to Lm292.3 million from Lm405 million last year. Imports of capital goods declined by Lm20.8 million to Lm98.8 million from Lm119.6 million last year. The importation of consumer goods dropped by Lm4.1 million or three per cent to Lm131.5 million from Lm135.6 million a year earlier. In the same period, the importation of fuel and lubricants increased by Lm1.2 million to Lm50.9 million from Lm49.7 million last year.
In the period under review, total exports were down by Lm34.8 million or 6.9 per cent to Lm468.6 million from Lm503.4 million in the same period last year. While domestic exports were down by Lm29.1 million to Lm426.5 million, re-exports declined by Lm5.7 million to Lm42.1 million from Lm47.8 million a year earlier.
The NSO also reports that, in the six months up to June of this year, the visible trade gap contracted by Lm101.6 million to Lm104.9 million from Lm206.5 million over the same period last year.
