EU impact studies workshops launched

The Chamber of Commerce in conjunction with the Malta-EU Information Centre yesterday launched a series of workshops to discuss the EU accession studies with special interest members.

During the workshops the experts who compiled the reports will explain their findings and take questions from the floor. Furthermore, MIC representatives will be available to clarify any difficulties on EU-related matters.

In a press conference preceding the first workshop organised yesterday, Foreign Minister Joe Borg dwelt on the importance of the studies undertaken. He added that during the formulation of its negotiating position, government took heed of suggestions made by interested parties. Dr Borg said that it was not the first time that the negotiating position had been changed.

He explained that the changes Malta has to undergo to be competitive in the international markets need to be undertaken irrespective of whether Malta joins the EU or not.

Speaking after the foreign minister, the head of the Malta-EU Information Centre, Simon Busuttil, said that the public’s response to the EU impact studies was very encouraging. He added that the series of discussions would enable interested persons, including the general public, to hear detailed explanations and clarify any doubts.
