Eurocheque guarantee service to terminate on 1 January

HSBC Bank Malta said that as from 1 January 2002, Europay International Belgium will be terminating its eurocheque guarantee service and all uniform eurocheques with valid eurocheque cards will no longer be treated as guaranteed cheques.

Most of the countries throughout Europe (including Malta) have stopped issuing eurocheques. However, a substantial amount of eurocheques with valid cards originating from the Scandinavian Countries and from Germany are still in circulation.

The business community is therefore to exercise caution when accepting eurocheques as payment in order not to suffer any unexpected losses.
