Volksbank Malta Limited, the leading bank for non-Maltese customers, has introduced Mr. Maurice Mizzi as Chairman of the Bank on the occasion of its annual Christmas dinner on Friday, 14th December 2001 at Poco Loco Restaurant in St Julians. Mr Mizzi, a well-known businessman in Malta, was educated at St. Aloysius College and later attended University, where he obtained a diploma of Legal Procurator. He joined the family business in 1957 and was initially responsible for the development of Mizzi Ltd., the owners of Delta Homecentres. In 1975 he became Chairman and CEO for Continental Cars Ltd. and was appointed Chairman of the Mediterranean Film Studios, a post he kept for the next eight years. During 1997/98, he was also appointed as Chairman of the Malta Development Corporation and from 1997 until 2000 he was director of Maltacom plc. At present, Mr Mizzi holds directorships in companies within the Mizzi Organisation and also serves as director in various other companies including Midi plc, Datatrak Holdings plc, Telemail Ltd and a newly formed company, Mizzi Europe Investments. He is president of the Maltese Arab Chamber of Commerce and has held the office of Honorary Consul of Iceland for the last 25 years. For Volksbank Malta Limited, the appointment of Mr. Mizzi as Chairman comes during a time of growth and development: While still pursuing the ongoing expansion into the Mediterranean and North African region, the Bank intends to open a Foreign Exchange Bureau at its premises in Sliema shortly. Even though Volksbank Malta Limited will for the near future be restricted to business with customers not resident in Malta, the management is currently working on plans and procedures to convert to an onshore status by the year 2003.
