Former Maltacom heads compete with state carrier

Following the liberalisation of the telecommunications market at the beginning of the year, a number of start-up international carriers have burst onto the market. One of the latest was Euroweb – also a leading Internet service provider - led by former Maltacom Chairman and CEO Tony Mejlaq and former Deputy Chairman and Technical Director Saviour Zammit.

The move places the new international carrier in direct competition with the former state telephony monopoly, with which both Mejlaq and Zammit had been employed.

Edmund Gatt Baldacchino also joined the Board of Directors in November and represents the United Group, which became shareholders in Euroweb Limited with a view to participating in the opportunities arising from the liberalisation of telecommunications.

The international call service, UniTel, differs from other recent market entries in that it allows customers to make low cost international phone calls directly from both normal fixed and mobile telephones using a pre-paid card platform.

UniTel’s services are provided over carrier grade equipment supplied by Cisco and a state-of-the art prepaid card platform from leading platform suppliers N-Soft Limited, who are represented in Malta by Euroweb’s parent company, Techinvest Limited.
