Maltacom signs agreement with Cypriot authority

The Maltacom Group and Cyprus Telecommunications Authority (CYTA) on Friday initialled a reciprocal agreement which will provide for the strengthening of the bonds of cooperation between the two organisations.

The scope of the agreement is for the two telecommunications entities to extend mutual assistance in various aspects closely associated with the rapid developments of Information and Communications technologies, and more specifically in the fields of the Internet, Multi media and Wireless Communications services. Aspects of social, cultural and sports will also form part of the CYTA–Maltacom Agreement, involving the employees of both organisations.

The agreement focuses on the development of Commercial relationships, Economical, and Financial issues, Exchange of information on scientific and technological know-how and, more importantly on the development of the next generation networks. The agreement stipulates the setting up of a task force which shall meet at least annually in Cyprus and Malta, alternately, and will devise programmes of action in the areas hitherto mentioned.

Maltacom Chairman Maurice Zarb Adami in his address emphasised that the continued technological and quality upgrading of services is mandatory for the success of Business in all sectors of the economy. The forging of strategic alliances and enhancement of International Cooperation and dialogue can yield substantial benefits through the effects of synergy. The past years have witnessed a series of activities, which Maltacom and CYTA exploited to their mutual advantage and he vividly recalls his role as a Director of Telemalta Corporation in 1991 when the first reciprocal telecommunications agreement was entered into between CYTA and Telemalta. Mr Zarb Adami expressed full confidence that the initialling of this agreement will further cement the already existing relations between CYTA and Maltacom.

In his address, Stathis Papadakis, the Chairman of CYTA noted that from what he had seen, during the two days of his visit in Malta, he formed an excellent impression of the progress that Maltacom p.l.c. has achieved in the communications sector, especially after liberalisation was introduced.

Referring to CYTA, Mr Papadakis said that with its rich portfolio of products and services and state-of-the-art national and international network, comprising an extensive fibre optic submarine cable network and satellite systems, it has managed to turn Cyprus into a telecommunications hub in the Eastern Mediterranean.

He continued saying that CYTA possesses both the will and the plans that will place it in the category of the technologically pioneering organisations and provide the economy of Cyprus with the necessary infrastructure that will enable it to achieve a high rate of growth during the first decades of the 21st century.

He stressed that during his visit to the Maltacom Group he had the opportunity to discuss various areas of cooperation with the Chairman of Maltacom p.l.c., Mr Maurice Zarb Adami and many other members of management and that he was confident that the agreement the two organisations had just signed, will further strengthen the bonds already existing between the two organisations.

Mr Papadakis continued saying that recent developments are bringing the two countries even closer as both were accepted at the December Copenhagen Summit Meeting for full membership of the European Union at the next enlargement.
