GWU Drydocks secretary resigns
General Workers Union Construction and Metal Section
Secretary Alfred Cassar resigned yesterday following what appears to
have been a dispute with his fellow section council members.
According to reports, Mr Cassar was yesterday threatened with the ultimatum
that either he resign or the entire board would make the move themselves.
The resignation follows hot on the heels of the historic Drydocks agreement
that was signed between the GWU and the government,.
The resignation also came at a time when over 300 workers who were posted
to the newly formed Industrial Projects and Services Ltd company presented
their case in front of the Industrial Tribunal claiming discrimination
in the way they had been selected to form part of the fledgling company.
Mr Cassar and the council members of the section have reached a consensus
with the agreement reached with government, with no dissent being noted
at the time.
However, certain pending issues related to the agreement have caused
concern among workers, which had led to confrontational protests last
week.
