The last trade fairs in Naxxar will be held in 2007, The Malta Financial and Business Times has learned. The Trade Fairs Corporation will have to look for other premises, as the rent of the grounds at Naxxar come to an end in three years’ time.
The ground at Naxxar is the only specialised fairs centre in the Maltese islands, comprising 44,000 square metres of exhibition halls and a conference venue, all landscaped within the grounds of the historic Palazzo Parisio.
The first international trade fair at the Naxxar grounds took place 49 years ago in 1955, but its precursors kicked off in the grounds of San Anton Gardens in 1952 following a modestly organised exhibition in 1949.
The owners of the land at Naxxar have already applied for the construction of a 42-storey tower intended for a mixed residential, commercial development including office space. Speaking to this newspaper, Marcus Marshall, who represents Scicluna Estates, the owners of the land, said it was not the intention of the developers to spoil the area, “the development will have to complement the existing buildings, including Palazzo Parisio.”
