At a meeting held this week at the Police Headquarters in Floriana between Police Commissioner John Rizzo and Central Bank Governor Michael C Bonello, the Governor presented the Commissioner with two computers and ancillary equipment to be used by the newly set up National Counterfeit Office in their operations against currency counterfeiting.
The Governor said that this donation was meant as a symbolic gesture by the Bank to express its support and appreciation for the work carried out by the Police in this area. The two sides also signed a Memorandum of Understanding that establishes a framework for co-operation and provides for the regular exchange of information and the compilation of a national database in the field of counterfeit currency.
While acknowledging the responsibility of the Central Bank of Malta in safeguarding the quality and authenticity of the Maltese currency, the Governor said that he had noted with great satisfaction the successful operations recently carried out by the Police to stem the circulation of counterfeit notes. He said that while co-operation between the Police and the Bank has always been strong, the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding should serve to further intensify the level of co-operation and also to reaffirm the commitment of the two sides to combat currency counterfeiting. |
