Government’s calculation showing how a reduction of public holidays which fall on a weekend will increase productivity by around 1.5 per cent in 2005 is flawed and the workings presented to the social partners are “a childish attempt at economic estimation” according to economist Edward Scicluna.
Speaking to The Malta Financial and Business Times, the former MCESD chairman said the calculation was flawed because whoever worked it out had simply “assumed” the data required to compute the result, something that not even a first year university student would have done...

Home Affairs and Justice Minister Tonio Borg has confirmed the Maltese Government will be moving according to the EU Directive which entered into force last Sunday, allowing asylum seekers access to the labour market after a stipulated period of time from the date of their application for asylum.
Directive 2003/9/EC, which lays down minimum standards for the reception of asylum seekers, will obliged Malta to grant asylum seekers applying for refugee status access to the labour market within a year of their application....

Describing the industrial action ordered by the GWU at the Drydocks last week as a pantomime, Investments Minister Austin Gatt yesterday accused the Union’s Drydocks section of pandering to the interests of a very small group of employees to the detriment of the 1,700-strong workforce.

The Ministry for Information Technology has told The Malta Financial and Business Times that further to the offer to be made by HP computers to provide affordable computers to students, “next week another company will be launching similar initiatives”.
The ministry told this newspaper that besides the new offer “another two huge players have approached Government to run similar initiatives”...
