Duty-free cars for returned migrants

Persons with special needs and returned migrants returning to Malta with cars registered in non-EU countries are entitled to duty-free benefits on their cars, and will not be required to pay any duty levied by Customs.
The information was confirmed by Urban Development and Roads Minister Jesmond Mugliett in Parliament.
According to Mugliett, the Ministry of Finance can authorise an exemption of payment of duty according to criteria established by the ministry.
Before an application is filed with the Malta Transport Authority (ADT), people with special needs need an exemption from the Ministry of Finance.
Returned migrants have to be classified within this category by the Customs office, as well as furnishing evidence to the ADT proving that they had lived abroad for ten years.
However, the ADT does not have a formula for this particular category, and returned migrants have to inform the ADT in writing as well as presenting all relevant documentation.
