For the third year running 120 players had a chance to show off their golf skills in the Emirates Golf Challenge. The event, which was sponsored by Emirates, the Dubai-based international airline, was held over three days in the grounds of the Royal Malta Golf Club in Marsa.
Peter Satariano and Nick Laferla were declared the winner and runner up respectively of the Emirates Golf Challenge 2005. They each received the handsome prize of two Emirates return air tickets to Dubai.
On the first day, 30 ladies took off in style in the Ladies competition and the game was quite a tough one. Ms. Eileen Borg emerged victorious with a score of 37 points followed by Frances Bergedhal as runner up with 36 points.
Saturday saw the 80 male players battling it out in the Men’s stiff competition but mostly charged with excitement. Peter Satariano came in with 43 points and he was closely followed by seven other players.
The mixed competition on Sunday was the final game and immediately got off into action. The aggregate score for the two days (Ladies and Mens) was taken into account. The heat of the two past days of golf was beginning to take its toll as there was only one score which registered over 40 points. The highest scorer on the Final day was JJ Micallef, a 14 year-old, who was the youngest player in the field.
Peter Satariano emerged as winner with a total score of 82 points and Nick Laferla was the runner up with 78 points.
Emirates District Manager, Paul Fleri Soler, presented the prizes and trophies to the lucky winners Peter Satariano and Nick Laferla at a prize-giving ceremony after the golf challenge. Prizes were also presented to Eileen Borg, who received two trophies for having the highest Ladies score on both days, and JJ Micallef and Peter Satariano for achieving the highest score in the Mens’ competition.
While congratulating the winners, Mr Fleri Soler, said: “Emirates' involvement in golf and golf sponsorship is truly international and the airline is involved with golfing events and tournaments around the world. The sport is also attracting a steady stream of followers even in Malta. We are confident that the two winners will visit the Emirates Golf Club during their stay in Dubai.”
