Oracle underlined its commitment last week to helping the Government of Malta attain a first-class information society and economy by holding a four-day Oracle conference on the island at which the Minister for Investment, Industry and Information Technology Austin Gatt, delivered the keynote speech.
Minister Gatt highlighted the Government’s alliance with Oracle as critical to transforming the country into an Information Communication Technology (ICT) centre of excellence by 2010. In his keynote speech, he outlined Malta’s achievements in information technology (IT) and eGovernment to date.
Oracle is committed to driving investment into Maltese business and education to help the Government achieve its 2010 targets. In January 2005, Oracle announced a four-year Vertical Strategic Alliance with the Government of Malta involving partnerships with the country’s Universities and Vocational Colleges, extensive sponsorship and training programmes for students, and support for entrepreneurship and start-ups in ICTs.
“Whilst great progress has been made in IT, the Government of Malta remains focused on delivering more educational initiatives to increase technological awareness and encourage our entrepreneurial community,” commented Austin Gatt, Minister for Investment, Industry and Information Technology. “Our collaboration with Oracle will play a vital role in achieving these aims. The relationship this Government has been developing with Oracle is, in my view, an experience that can well and truly prove that we can reach these goals for our mutual benefit.”
Gatt continued, “The Government of Malta has no difficulty in recognising that its ambitions for Malta to become a globally-recognised ICT centre of excellence can not be achieved alone. Our vision is not limited to what we can do, but rather what can be done. Oracle has agreed to join us in working to achieve our vision for 2010. It is right for me to acknowledge that with Oracle’s assistance and their commitment we are well on track to meeting our goals.”
Kevin Attard, managing director of Oracle Malta, remarked, “In the short period since the opening of our office in September 2004, Oracle has demonstrated its commitment to Malta through a combination of initiatives, such as Oracle® Academy, the University Students Summer Work, free Oracle Software to ICT Students, and the Oracle PartnerNetwork membership to ICT Startup companies. The very fact that Malta was chosen to host Oracle’s annual pan-EMEA marketing conference further demonstrates the company’s dedication to strengthening opportunities for the local market.” Austin Gatt was speaking at Oracle’s annual marketing meeting for the EMEA region which attracted over 200 Oracle employees.
