Business tourism registered an increase of 14.7 per cent for the month of October making up for a decline of 1.8 per cent in holiday tourists visiting the island.
But while tourist air departures for the period January to October, totalled 1,040,961, an increase of 2.2 per cent over the same period last year, expenditure by tourists dropped by Lm4.1 million.
For the first 10 months of the year tourists from the UK market increased by 8.1 per cent registering a market share of 41.9 per cent. Other increases were registered from the Austrian, Danish, German, Swedish and US markets.
On the other hand, French tourists declined by 4.3 per cent as did other markets such as Italy, Belgium, Russia and Libya.
In the period under review, tourist air departures increased to 21,978 over the same period last year while accommodation figures were mostly unchanged.
The number of nights spent in hotels registered a slight decrease in Malta by 0.6 per cent and increased by 5.6 per cent in Gozo.
Expenditure by tourists on package tours decreased by Lm14.6 million when compared to last year, whereas non-package travel registered an increase of Lm12.8 million.
Per capita expenditure by tourists decreased from Lm193.80 to Lm186. |
