Industry turnover up, employment down

During January 2006, the Turnover Index of the Capital Goods group increased by 7.5 per cent over January 2005. For the same period, this group registered a decrease in its Employment Index of 1.1 per cent from 85 to 84.1 and a decrease in its Wages and Salaries Index of 28.5 per cent from 92.2 in January 2005 to 65.9 in January 2006. The Hours Worked Index decreased by 27.5 per cent, in 2006 from 2005.
The Consumer Durable Goods group Turnover Index, registered an increase of 125 per cent, from 87.1 in January 2005 to 196 in January 2006. The Employment Index increased by 8.7 per cent for the same period under review. An increase of 17.2 per cent for the Wages and Salaries Index, from 142.2 in January 2005 to 166.7 in January 2006was also registered by this group. In January 2006, a decrease of 9.6 per cent was registered in the Hours Worked Index.
The Consumer Non-Durable Goods group registered an increase of 36.9 per cent in the Turnover Index, from January 2005 to January 2006. In the same period, the Employment Index increased by 1.5 per cent, from 89.5 to 90.8 The Wages and Salaries Index increased by 12.3 per cent and the Hours Worked Index registered a fall of 1 per cent.
During January 2006, the Turnover Index of the Energy group decreased by 50.2 per cent over January 2005. Its Employment Index decreased by 3.9 per cent, from 110 in January 2005 to 105.7 in January 2006. For the same group there was an increase of 2.5 per cent in the Wages and Salaries Index and a decrease of 3.9 per cent in the Hours Worked Index.
The Turnover Index of the Intermediate Goods group increased by 24 per cent in January 2006 from January 2005. The Employment Index registered a decrease of 13.5 per cent, from 117.5 in January 2005 to 101.6 in January 2006. Also, the Wages and Salaries Index decreased by 16.4 per cent, from 119.8 in January 2005 to 100.2 in January 2006. The Hours Worked Index decreased from 110.7 in 2005 to 99.3 in 2006, a decrease of 10.3 per cent.
The Total Industry Turnover Index increased by 18.2 per cent from 87.6 to 103.5. The Total Industry’s Employment Index decreased by 1.1 per cent, from 97.9 in January 2005 to 96.8 in January 2006. The Wages and Salaries Index and the Hours Worked Index decreased 4.8 and 9.3 respectively
