Maltacom plc is no more. As from yesterday the quadruple-play telecommunications group covering fixed voice, mobile, broadband internet and digital television has been renamed as ‘GO’.
The move is being considered as the most strategic decision since Maltacom Group was acquired by Dubai based Tecom a year ago, however it is bound to raise criticism for the choice of dropping the “Maltese identity” from the once state-owned company.
GO group chairman Sonny Portelli was swift to defuse the initial controversy by commenting that “Maltacom did us proud, it has done an excellent job. But we change, we and move on. Our new badge and name reflects the reality that we have no frontiers. We are international.”
Sonny Portelli insisted that “there is nothing nationalistic or anti-nationalistic. Maltacom has served it’s one time purpose and made a great job.”
During his address to the media, Sonny Portelli explained that for the time being Maltacom will keep its original name as a listing on the Malta Stock Exchange for the time being.
It is expected that an extraordinary annual general meeting will be called for all shareholders to make the formal approval for the change in name.
The Go brand identity replaces the brands and respective logos of Maltacom, Maltanet, Multiplus and go mobile.
In this respect, the company announced three brand descriptors – GO Plus, GO Business and GO Mobile.
Go Plus covers services provided to residential customers at their homes, and encompases the fixed line business (talk), broadband internet (surf) as well as digital television (watch).
GO Business addresses business customers, where apart from providing voice, broadband and television, this package covers also co-location and hosting services.
GO Mobile will remain a distinct company, however it will encompass the mobile communications for both residential and business customers.
With the brand based on the notion of delivery, Sonny Portelli announced that with optimum service to customers in mind, GO’s tagline is ‘Made for you’.
GO Group Chief Executive Officer David Kay announced the launch as from yesterday of a brand new revamped website addressed www.go.com.mt |
