GRTU preparing to sue Enemalta

Karl Schembri

The GRTU (Chamber of Small Businesses) is awaiting a Malta Resources Authority investigation to conclude into last week’s power cuts and collecting claims of damages from its members as it prepares to sue the state energy provider, Enemalta.
On Monday, a GRTU delegation led by Hospitality and Leisure Vice President Philip Fenech met the MRA to discuss the damages and loss of business caused by the power outages and voltage fluctuations which are believed to run into thousands of liri among its members.
Speaking to Business Today, Fenech said his association, which has also protested with Investments Minister Austin Gatt, was preparing to sue Enemalta for compensation to its members. Fenech said MRA will be forwarding its investigation to GRTU once it is concluded.
“We urge our members to come forward with the damages they sustained because of the power cuts so that we could make our case with Enemalta,” Fenech said. “We don’t want this to happen again, it’s unacceptable. We depend on security of supply, quality and regularity of the electricity supply and we can’t afford to have all these damages just in the peak season.”
Fenech said his association was inundated with calls and complaints, especially from the entertainment and leisure industry, and more were still coming in as members were quantifying their damages.
Among the equipment hit by the power surges and outages were industrial freezers and air conditioners, lighting systems, computers, and ice making machines.
