LETTER | Wednesday, 28 November 2007
I am directed by the Commission for the Administration of Justice to refer to the article by George M. Mangion under the heading “Money laundering has become an issue” that appeared in the issue of 18th April 2007 of your paper.
In the said article it was state, inter alia, that “It appears that irrespective of a number of pleas from whistleblowers the government reportedly refused to respond to heed investigative reports exposed by MaltaToday uncovering information on a plethora of judges, magistrates, lawyers, notaries, businessmen and politicians who appear to have been involved in this network of corruption and deceit”.
As soon as its attention was drawn to these disturbing and serious allegations concerning judges, magistrates and lawyers the Commission asked the Chief Justice to take the matter up with the Police Authorities for the necessary investigations. The Police informed the Chief Justice that on being contacted, George M. Mangion could not substantiate his allegations. He could only refer to an article published in MaltaToday in May 2002, and to an article he found on a foreign website “which he could not recall”. He also referred to an investigation carried out by a Magistrate, years ago, and which concerned Mid-Med Bank. The Police concluded by saying that “Mangion stated that he has no information to offer but only quoted the mentioned sources”.
Any comment on the Commission’s part would be superfluous.
