New Federation of Building and Civil Engineering Contractors launched

Twenty-two major building and civil engineering contractors, have joined forces to form the new Federation of Building and Civil Engineering Contractors. This was announced by the Federation's first president. Mr George V. Xuereb, during a press briefing held at The Victoria Hotel, Sliema, on Wednesday 20 December.
Three other senior Federation officials, Vice president Mr. Angelo Xuereb and Secretary Mr Boris Farrugia thanked Mr Xuereb at the press briefing.
Talking about the Federations, Mr G.V, Xuerab said: "The Federation of Building and Civil Engineering Contractors intend to give immediate priority to some very long outstanding issues which for unknown reasons have been put aside by the authorities."
"It is very important to bring contractors in line and to set up a Federation which can be appreciated by the Government, the public sector and all other bodies directly connected with the Building Industry."
He pointed out,"I feel that the 22 major building and civil engineering contractors made history when they all met around a table on the 21 November 2000 and unanimously agreed to form this Federation."
The fledgling federation is fully aware that some contractors, although in their minority, need to bring their house in order.
Obviously, these would have to abide to the rules of the club. There will be no place for fly cowboys in this Federation he said, adding that the Federation will not stop at anything until the Maltese Building Contractor will no longer be looked at as a second c1ass citizen, a threat to the environment or a lawbreaking citizen.
"One tends to forget the important role played by Maltese Building and Civil Engineering Contractors in the Maltese economy and especially in the infrastructural works since the time of our forefathers" said Mr Xuereb.
Mr Xuereb said the first priority on the Federation's agenda is to classify, into suitable categories by an independent board, all its members and other Contractors who will show their interest in joining the Federation.
He added that other aims of the Federation are:-
• To ensure that all its members will adhere to a suitable Health and Safety Programme.
• To establish and enforce a standard form of Contract and Conditions throughout the Industry.
• To eliminate Barter arrangements which are draining the Contractors' Cash Flow.
• To introduce a Code of Practice for Building Contractors.

"I am confident that with the unanimous support and co-operation of present and future members, this newly born Federation of Building and Civil Engineering Contractors will achieve its goal in the time frames being established by the same Federation," said Mr Xuereb.
