New statute for EAN Malta

EAN Malta, the organisation which regulates Systems for article numbering, bar-coding scanning and electronic commerce was reconstituted with a new statute approved by an overwhelming number of members present at an Extraordinary General Meeting held on Friday 17 November 2000.
The new statute has also been approved by the highest authority of EAN International, the EAN Management Board, who believe that this re-structuring had to be carried out as the world-wide organisation was looking to Malta as the leader at regional level.

The new Board of Directors of EAN Malta is composed of eight members representing Industry (three members), Trade (Three members) and Services (Two members). The members are Godwin C Micallef (Chairman), Mario Pace (Deputy Chairman), Ray Grech, David Calleja-Urry, Ray Spiteri, Alexander Borg, Lorenzo Mule Stagno and Anton Mallia.

EAN Malta was originally founded in July 1992. The founding organisations were the Association of General Retailers & Traders (GRTU) and the Malta Federation of Industry (FOI).

For a number of years EAN Malta was administered from the offices of the founding organisations. In 1998 EAN Malta moved to its own premises and hired its own full-time staff. Following the recent reconstitution EAN Malta is now a fully-independent body.

Next year EAN Malta will be broadcasting a 13 part series on TV with the main subjects being information on Electronic Business’s, and Information and Communications Technology.

This week EAN Malta was host to 15 nations in an EAN International Regional Meeting. During the three days meeting the participants signed an agreement committing themselves to take part in a EUROPEAN UNION/ EUMEDIS Project called CODEMED. Them aim of this project is to create collaboration between the EU and countries in the Mediterranean. The proposal is to stimulate and facilitate the dissemination of electronic business and business process technologies in general and, ADC-Automatic Data Capture and EDI-Electronic Data Interchange in particular.

Mr. Reinhold Van Lennep, Chief Executive Officer of EAN International, who was in Malta for the Regional Meeting fully endorsed the endeavours of EAN Malta. He confirmed that EAN International looks forward to the continuation of the valuable contribution being made by EAN Malta in the Mediterranean Region. He also singled out Mr. Ray Vassallo, Chief Executive Officer of EAN Malta, who is also the EAN International Regional Co-ordinator and Project Manager of the CODEMED Project as being the driving force behind renewed enthusiasm by regional members of EAN. This should prove instrumental in the coming years in assisting EAN's efforts to widen its mission in the Mediterranean Region.
