Maltese-registered ship sinks off coast of Mauritius
The Merchant Shipping Directorate of the Malta Maritime Authority is investigating a causality involving a Maltese registered ship, Buff Bay, reported to have foundered early yesterday morning some 200 miles off the south east coast of Mauritius.
The Buff Bay is a 1981-built general cargo ship of 4,718 gross tonnage and was on a journey between Indonesia and East Africa with a 6,000 tonnes cargo of bagged cement.
Preliminary reports indicate that the foundering was due to a flooding of the cargo hold. All 16 crew members of the ship are reported safe on board the Cyprus-flagged ship Barnhard Schulte bound for South Africa.
