Telecomms regulator asked to investigate phonemail introduction

Maltacom has come under fire from the Consumers’ Union for the indiscriminate way it introduced the phonemail service to all its subscribers without giving customers the chance to refuse such a service.

The Consumers’ Union said that this contrasted heavily with Maltacom’s stance in relation to itemised phone billing, which the company wanted to provide only to customers who requested it despite the Regulator deciding that everyone should receive an itemised bill for free.

The Union yesterday asked the Regulator to investigate what it described as an abuse, claiming that consumers were denied the right to choose. The way Maltacom introduced the phonemail service was also described by the Union as ‘pressure selling’.
