The latest figures issued by the National Statistics Office (NSO) for November showed the number of registered unemployed increased by almost a thousand when compared to the same period last year.
According to the unemployment statistics for November 2009 published by the NSO yesterday, the number of registered unemployed was 988 people more than in the same month last year.
The number of registered unemployed last November numbered 7,588. Of these, 6,801 people were registering in Malta and 787 were registering in Gozo.
In the 12 months to November 2009, those registering for work in Malta increased by 932 (15.9 per cent), those in Gozo by 56 (7.7 per cent).
The number of men on the unemployment register over the same period increased by 743 (14.4 per cent), the number of women by 245 (16.9 per cent).
The increase in unemployment is evident in all age groups, with the highest percentage of registered unemployed registered among the over-45 with 538 persons or 25 per cent.
The number of persons registering for work for less than 20 weeks increased by 248 (7.8 per cent), while the number of registered unemployed between 21 and 52 weeks went up by 335 (15.4 per cent).
Occupations related to services and trades were the most sought among men, whereas women tended to look for jobs which were clerical or service-oriented.
