400 companies assisted for R&D

Almost 400 companies received assistance last year to invest in research, development and innovation, through programmes sponsored by Malta Enterprise and the EU.
Speaking during a tour of Abertax Technologies Ltd in Corradino yesterday, Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi said that this company was an example showcase of how one of those 400 companies had managed to translate their research into market applications.
Government, the Prime Minister said, has placed more focus on industry-related research at the University, to ensure, as far as possible, that resources were not duplicated.
Abertax Technologies produces battery management units, battery monitoring systems, capacitive level sensors and gas release valves. It has also developed magnetic valves for industrial cleaning machines and for roof tanks and storage tanks.
During his visit, Lawrence Gonzi was accompanied by Finance Minister Tonio Fenech and University Rector Juanito Camilleri.
