Exchange control liberalisation effective Monday
The exchange control liberalisation measures announced by Finance Minister John Dalli during Budget 2001 will come into effect on Monday. The new measures have been adopted as a means to removing, or further relaxing, restrictions currently imposed on many types of capital transactions while also holding the aim of relaxing quantitative limits on current payments that are still subject to exchange control. SFC tops equity appreciation list, Maltacom carries 37% of MSE total trading
Trading on the Malta Stock Exchange this year has been interesting and varied, but perhaps not quite as varied as many would have hoped. On a general note, listed equities on the Exchange tended to peak at the year’s inception, trailing off toward the year’s middle while reaching their lows, or close to their lows, now at the year’s end. Drydocks wins another large million dollar contract

A shipping and cruise line, has awarded Malta Drydocks with a Lm3 million (US$6.6 million) contract. Within the lines of the contract, Malta Drydocks will be responsible for modernising one of the corporation’s British passenger liners. Economic Services Minister, Josef Bonnici, enthused, while visiting employees working on Christmas Day at Air Malta and the MIA, that this is the second contract awarded to the ‘yard recently. Prof. Bonnici added that nine consortia were interested in providing consultancy services to the government on privatising the MIA. The Privatisation Unit is expected to select the consultants next month.

New Federation of Building and Civil Engineering Contractors launched
Twenty-two major building and civil engineering contractors, have joined forces to form the new Federation of Building and Civil Engineering Contractors. This was announced by the Federation's first president. Mr George V. Xuereb, during a press briefing held at The Victoria Hotel, Sliema, on Wednesday 20 December.

. Herasails Limited provide set for Retequattro's Melaverde
Melaverde, the popular Sunday lunchtime programme on Italian television station Rete Quattro, was recently filmed on board the M/S Hera II. The programme presented Gabriella Carlucci will be aired at 12.30pm on Sunday 31st December 2000.

European Central Bank Seminar on accession process
A seminar on the EU accession process was jointly organised in Vienna on 14 and 15 December 2000 by the European Central Bank (EC B) and the Oesterreichische Nationalbank (OeNB), the Austrian central bank.

Lack of growth in sales blamed on competition
Sales figures for this Christmas season are likely to be similar to those achieved during the same period last year, according to a number of shops contacted by The Business Times.
