 The Commission for Fair Trading has commenced investigations into the process by which the ministry for information technology has reached an agreement with HP to supply affordable computers to students.
Commission chairman magistrate Silvio Meli started the investigation on Tuesday following representations made by the GRTU. The Commission has also been asked to examine whether the government plans to contravene the public procurement regulations and to consider whether the plans will distort the market.

A legal notice to adjust the eco-contributions introduced at the end of 2004 was published in the government gazette Tuesday with changes retroactive to 1 January 2005. This means that companies that sold products at the 'old' rates will now only be asked to pay to the VAT department at the new lower rate of eco-contribution.
The legal notice was meant to be discussed in Cabinet Monday, following a decision by Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi that all legal notices should be channelled through him before publication, but that discussion did not result in any surprises.

The Malta Hotels and Restaurants Association have expressed their doubts as to the sustainability of the Malta-Gozo helicopter link, priced at Lm50 for non-Maltese residents, saying it was "extremely concerned" as to whether the agreement with Spanish company Helicopteros Del Sureste will prove to be sustainable.
The MHRA said it welcomed the agreement reached to reintroduce the helicopter service between Malta and Gozo, four months after the Malta Air Charter ceased operating the service.
"The association also notes that Helicopteros Del Sureste is a reputable company and believes it could offer a service of the highest level," the MHRA said, but noted that the prices announced "are exorbitant"...
