The process to introduce high speed mobile telephony technology in Malta will start rolling today when the Malta Communications Authority issues a call for applications for three third generation (3G) frequencies.
Although the current two mobile phone operators yesterday chose not to comment as to whether they intend applying, it is widely believed that both Vodafone and go mobile will eventually submit applications to secure 3G frequencies for themselves.
go mobile, a subsidiary of Maltacom, has repeatedly said over the past few months that 3G technology is the way forward.
The contest is also expected to attract foreign competition, although when contacted yesterday the MCA said it was not aware of any interest from international operators...

Announcing future plans for Italy’s fourth largest bank, Capitalia – of which Banco di Sicilia is a subsidiary, Bank CEO Matteo Arpe said negotiations had reached an advanced stage for a sale of its shares in the Bank of Valletta to a third party “in conjunction with the Malta government.”
Arpe was announcing plans for his company and said company profits included the market value of shares its shares in Bank of Valletta, which amounted to EUR75.8 million...“for which the process of sale in conjunction with the Malta government is at an advanced stage”...

A bill to transpose the European Union Market Abuse Directive is set to better safeguard investor confidence with updated rules and hefty fines applicable to inside information and disclosure.
The Maltese Parliament is set to debate the new measures to prevent abuse in the financial markets in the coming weeks.
The primary objective of the bill, besides ensuring the implementation of updating measures designed to safeguard investor confidence, will repeal the Insider Dealing and Market Abuse Offences Act.
It will also make more detailed provisions against market manipulation.
The new bill also lays down rules concerning the dissemination of information by journalists and researchers pertaining to financial instruments, and states that all interests and conflicts of interests must be fully declared...
