Incensed Gozitan restaurateurs and bar owners are not mincing their words about the recently installed towing signs at the Cirkewwa Quay, describing the decision as a “blow” for Gozo and “absolute madness”.
Talking to The Malta Financial and Business Times yesterday, restaurateurs at Mgarr Gozo remarked that the decision was a “blow for all of Gozo since Maltese patrons were more inclined to travel to Gozo if they could leave their cars parked at the quay.”
Michael Caruana of the Gozo Business Chamber told The Malta Financial and Business Times that the new parking arrangements at Cirkewwa were “absolute madness.”
“Gozitans who are accustomed to leaving their car at the terminal are going to incur unnecessary expenses and Maltese patrons will be less likely to frequent our restaurants,” Caruana said.
The restaurant owners echoed the same sentiments. They are disillusioned with “the arbitrary manner by which decisions were being taken.”
The manager at a Chinese restaurant in Mgarr said that most of the staff parties that they organised this year were for Maltese clients. “Whenever workers from factories and banks want to organise an alternative to the usual staff party they come to Gozo.”
The workers and owners of restaurants are floating ideas on how to oppose this new parking scheme even suggesting petitions and general strikes. But they are otherwise at a loss on how to remedy the situation. After waiting patiently for three years for the ferry terminal to be completed, and which still has a long way to go, they are understandably bewildered by what they see as the government’s attempt to stifle business in their island.
