Prime Minister presented with Principles of Maltese Taxation publication
The Malta Institute of Management (MIM) met up with the Hon Prime Minister Dr Lawrence Gonzi, in order to present him with a copy of the publication ‘Principles of Maltese Taxation’ by Dr Robert Attard.
Lawrence Mizzi, MIM President, Reuben Buttigieg, MIM Chairperson, and Joseph Cassar, MIM Council Member together with the author of the book, discussed the contents of the publication and the development of taxation in Malta. Dr Attard gave the Prime Minister a brief overview of the book, whilst Mr Buttigieg explained the contribution that MIM has made in placing Malta Taxation on the International Tax Map.
Mr Buttigieg, who has headed the project, said that this is only the first step in MIM’s endeavours in the development of Financial Services. The book also serves as a text book for students of the Advanced Diploma in International Taxation Malta Variant. The book has so far been a tremendous success among various practitioners and academics, who refer to it on a day-to-day basis. The book has also attracted international purchase, particularly from commonwealth countries.
The importance of Islamic Finance for the Maltese financial industry was also brought up during the meeting. Dr Gonzi, who strongly believes in Malta’s potential for tapping Islamic Finance, highly praised MIM for its initiatives in the sector over the last two years. Mr Buttigieg shared his vision with the Prime Minister, explaining how Malta can be marketed as an Islamic Finance Centre by direct government intervention through the issuance of Sukuk.
Dr Gonzi also congratulated MIM on its initiatives spanning the various sectors of the Maltese economy particularly in the financial industry and management related areas, and commended its efforts to collaborate with other organisations such as the Malta Employers Association and the Malta Union of Bank Employees, among others.
Dr Gonzi encouraged MIM to continue contributing to Malta’s economic growth by providing tangible activities such as the organisation of international education programmes, conferences, and publications.
