SmartCity Malta presented to Malta’s Honorary Consuls
Over 90 Honorary Consuls for Malta residing in 49 different countries visited SmartCity Malta, the first ICT and media cluster in the Mediterranean. The Honorary Consuls are presently attending Malta’s Consular Representation Conference held between today and this Friday by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
During the briefing by SmartCity Malta CEO, Claudio Grech, the Honorary Consuls had the opportunity to gather first-hand information on the key objectives and development of the ICT and media cluster leading to establishing the first self-sustained business township in the region.
The Honorary Consuls were informed that the construction phase of the first ready-to-operate office block, SCM01, providing 12,000 sqm of office space with intelligent infrastructure, commenced in November 2008 and is earmarked for completion in 2010.
This was followed by the release of further office buildings and other ancillary components which will collectively contribute towards the sustainable growth of SmartCity Malta and its evolution into a lifestyle destination. The prominent emphasis of work-life balance will be evidently notable in view of the wide-ranging value added services and amenities that SmartCity Malta will be offering. The Honorary Consuls were provided information on how as a unique business destination, serving both the European and North African regions, SmartCity Malta will have a mix of components to cater for the knowledge-based township community’s needs such as retail, amenities, entertainment and residential units.
Mr Grech highlighted the importance of SmartCity Malta in supporting the growth of the knowledge-based economy in Malta for the creation of high-valued added jobs in the country and also for creating an unprecedented network of opportunities with other economies, initially focusing on the Middle East but gradually expanding to all the corners of the world. He explained SmartCity Malta’s committed vision to develop a unique destination for all businesses, whether they are international, regional or local and how the Honorary Consuls had a central role to play in relaying the information on this development in their respective countries of origin.
“During this visit, SmartCity Malta’s management discussed international business development opportunities with the Honorary Consuls. This unique opportunity for SmartCity Malta to reach out to such a distinguished and global audience in one venue should further increase the existent healthy interest by a significant number of knowledge-based companies to set up their operations in SmartCity Malta,” said Mr Grech.
