Valletta Waterfront gears up for motorsports

Preparations are underway to host motorsport displays and activities, called Roaring Sundays, at the Valletta Waterfront from April 19 through to October. Classic cars, military vehicles, motorcycles, sports cars and related activities will take place a Sunday or two every month to give patrons value added experience.
The events are organised by VISET Malta plc, operators of the Valletta Waterfront, in partnership with the Malta Motorsport Federation and in collaboration with PaqPaq TV programme. During one of the events of the Roaring Sundays, the public may also support the worldwide Campaign for Global Road Safety by signing a petition calling for a Decade of Action for Road Safety 2010-2020. The local ambassador of the campaign is singer and songwriter Kristina Casolani who will be taking photos with visitors endorsing the petition.
In 2008 the Make Roads Safe campaign called on the United Nations to organise a first ever global governmental meeting on road safety. Now the UN is supporting such a ministerial meeting which will be held in Moscow in November 2009. The Make Roads Safe campaign is calling on governments attending this conference to support a global ‘Decade of Action for Road Safety’ with the aim of halving the predicted increase in road deaths by 2020.
Road crashes are a global epidemic killing on a similar scale to malaria and TB. Every six seconds someone is killed or maimed on the world’s roads. A young child dies every three minutes.
Classic Sports Car Club Malta will kick off the Roaring Sundays on April 19, with an exhibition and a sixties theme entertainment program. Freestyle footballer Jeon Kwon, reputably the second best in the world, will also be participating.
“The Valletta Waterfront is known to buzz with activity particularly during the summer months. This year we wanted to enhance the experience for our patrons by hosting motorsports-related activities and showcase, in one area, some of the best-kept secrets in this fascinating industry,” said Joshua G. Giordimaina, Marketing Executive of VISET Malta plc.
Malta Motorsport Federation Chairman, Tonio Cini, said: “Valletta Waterfront has all the attributes to organise Static shows, so that we could demostrate the passion and dedication of our motor enthusiasts. Fasinacting vehicles will be exhibited during these months of the Roaring Sundays at Valletta Waterfront for the enjoyment of the public. The Federation is spearheading the Global, “Make Road Safety” Campaign in Malta, to support the call for a ‘Decade of Action’ in developing countries, which campaign has the Global ambassador Michelle Yeoh, who is one of Asia’s most versatile leading actors. She has starred in global hits such as the James Bond movie Tomorrow Never Dies, Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon, Memoirs of a Geisha, Sunshine, Mummy 3 and Babylon AD. One of the Commissioner Members of this campaign is Michael Schumacher, who was 7 times F1 World Champion.
“Together with VISET Malta plc and Kristina Casolani, Malta’s Campaign Ambassador, we are planning to put up a safety show whereby the aim is to create awarness, educate the public on road safety and usage and collect signatures for this campaign. The Federation calls the public to support and sign this petition for the Decade of Action and visit the exhibitions which our local clubs will be setting up during these coming months.”
