Young Enterprise companies gear up for finals

The 10 companies in this year’s HSBC Young Enterprise Company Programme will be vying for the winning title at the Final Presentations and Awards Ceremony at the Hilton Malta Conference Centre on May 3, under the patronage of Education Minister Dolores Cristina.
The winning company will represent Malta at the Junior Achievement Young Enterprise European Company of the Year Competition to be held in Rotterdam between July 2-5.
The companies, formed by sixth-form students representing five colleges, are proposing different innovative products and services, ranging from environmental devices to electronic services and educational tools reflecting consumer demands in today’s society. Their products and services were recently exhibited at the Young Enterprise National Trade Fair at the Plaza Shopping Centre in Sliema.
Young Enterprise (YE) teams are by now renowned for producing, every year, a vast range of innovative yet very reasonably priced products and services. Spectrum, a company from De la Salle College are marketing EON torch, reputably the world’s thinnest torch by renowned British designer Iain Sinclair. Fridge It, from St Martin College, have come up with Extra Life, a product that preserves fruit and vegetables in the refrigerator for a longer time. An educational DVD for children has been produced by YES, a company from Verdala International School, while Speed of Light, from St Aloysius College, are selling Luglight, which can be clipped on the inside of a purse or bag. Microtech, also from St Aloysius College, have compiled an extensive directory of 500 restaurants, complete with contact details and the type of cuisine they cater for.
Another St Aloysius company, Hungup, have produced Eco Hangers, made of recyclable material and which offers customers, like dry cleaners, the possibility to include paid advertising on them. Solergy, from Junior College, have come up with a portable solar panel mobile charger. Hooked, from Junior College, have created Bag Hooks to be installed under tables, of restaurants for example, to hold handbags without taking up space unnecessarily. A computer-based educational library has been put together by rticulate, a Junior College company, while U-Knighted, again from Junior College, have invented a Melita and Gaudos board game aimed to further education in Maltese culture and heritage through play.
“The products and services brought to the finals this year, like any other year, show the students’ dedication and hard work to come up with solutions that are both functional and financially viable. They all deserve our praise and we wish the most convincing company that wins the title the best of luck for the European finals,” said Josef Camilleri, Chairman of the Junior Achievement Young Enterprise Malta.
Junior Achievement Young Enterprise Malta, which has been running for over 20 years, is supported by HSBC Bank Malta plc as main sponsor, and by GO plc and AirMalta plc as official communications partner and official carrier respectively.
Past achievers who may wish to reserve a seat for the national finals on May 3 may send an email to [email protected]
