Business co-operation between Maltese and Tuscan industries

The Malta Federation of Industry, with the collaboration of the MDC and METCO, co-ordinated a visit to Malta by a high-level business delegation organised by the Associazioiie degli Industriali della Provincia di Grosseto (Assindustria Grosseto). The delegation was beaded by Sig. Giovanni Palmieri, the President of Assindustria Grosseto, who was accompanied by Dott. Giovainni Tamburro, the Director, Sig. Sergio Francioli, the President of the Small Enterprise Section in the Association and Avv. Giulio Fedele.

A two day programme of meetings commenced on Thursday 2 November by a Courtesy Visit to Minister for Economic Services Prof. Josef Bonnici by all the twenty-four delegates. The delegation was then hosted by METCO where, following addresses by the FOI, the Malta Chamber of Commerce, the Euro Info Correspondence Centre at METCO and the MDC, approximately one hundred one-to-one meetings were organised between the Tuscan companies and local operators. Over 40 local establishments took part in this initiative whereby generally a favourable outcome to these meetings were reported. The local undertakings ranged from sectors in foodstuffs, equipment, protective wear, metal/aluminium fixtures & fittings, energy generation, IT and application software systems, environment, marine, electronics, construction, air-conditioning, transport and logistics, as well as hotel establishments.

Official meetings were also organised with a special focus on environment and energy generation. In fact, a meeting with Vincent Gauci, Director of the Environment Protection Department, and later a meeting with Arch. Anthony Abela, Director of the Drainage department, discussed the priority areas which need to be addressed by the Maltese economy and highlighted the various possibilities for collaborative agreements with the Tuscan operators. Alternative energy generation was discussed in detail during a meeting held with the EneMalta Chairman Prof. Robert Ghirlando. One of the Italian delegates, Eng. Francesco Trezza of ERGA - Gruppo E.N.E.L., explained the variety of electricity generating equipment, which use renewable energy sources.

The programme for the Assindustria Officials also featured a courtesy visit to the Italian Ambassador S.E. Dott. Giancarlo Riccio and a meeting with AirMalta General Manager Mr J. Cappello, wherein development possibilities between Malta and the region of Grosseto were discussed.
