Tony Grech, owner of Rogantino’s Restaurant in Landrijiet really managed to get this New Year off to a special start.
One of Tony’s many hobbies is collecting old whiskeys and a few months ago, whilst on a search for some, he happened to come across a cache of old port and fortified wines. A true treasure to make anyone’s mouth water.
Tony took the risk and bought the whole lot and after having sampled the various wines he did what a true friend would do - share it. Now he also wants to share these with clients at Port and Cheese events he is organising every month.
The crates of fortified wines he unearthed some months ago had last seen light of day around 65 years ago, that’s right, before World War II.
The night of fortified wines start at 20:00hrs, with independent wine advisor Josef Bonello giving an explanation of the find and the history of wine making in Portugal. He also goes into the detail of each of the ports and fortified wines that will be tasted on the night.
The group is limited to 25 persons and four wines are sampled , together with a platter of fine cheeses to match the occasion. The special wines of the nights inlude: Macedo Moscatel Velho, Macedo Quinado Vinho Fino do Porto Longa-vid, Kopke Full Rich Ruby Douro Port and others.
