“Six VAT Department employees have been suspended from work with effect from the 6 April 2009 in accordance with the Public Service Commission (Disciplinary Procedures) Regulations,” a Finance Ministry spokesperson told Business Today early yesterday afternoon.
Asked whether the police were investigating more VAT Department employees in connection with this case or whether the ring around the scam had been made, the Finance Ministry spokesperson said: “It is up to the Police to decide on the course of the investigations and on whom to investigate”.
The ministry also declined to comment when asked by Business Today to state what was the estimated amount of money that the VAT Department is estimated to have lost as a result of this scam, and whether the scam was still running at this point in time.
On Sunday, the Sunday Times, quoting unnamed sources, reported that “millions of euros are believed to have been lost as a result of fraudulent practices by VAT department staff going back a number of years”.
