Vodafone underwater cable undergoes maintenance

Following events that led to damages to the fibre optic sea cables in the Mediterranean on 18 December 2008, Vodafone Malta has initiated a precautionary maintenance measure on its cable.
Although maintenance works on the cable require stopping the service, Vodafone’s internet service to clients will not be affected thanks to the contingency plan signed between Vodafone Malta and GO.
“In view of the existing connectivity agreement between Vodafone and GO, disruption to the service will be minimised as GO is providing Vodafone Malta with international bandwidth capacity. We do not anticipate reduction in quality of service whilst the works are on-going. Every effort will be made to minimise the duration of the maintenance works,” said a Vodafone Malta official.
Originally, the December incidence leading to damages to the fibre optic cables in the Mediterranean did not affect Vodafone’s service and at no time was quality of service jeopardised. In the interest of the need to maintain national connectivity, Vodafone did not start the precautionary inspection and the necessary maintenance on its cable immediately in December 2008 but instead provided GO with alternative routing and maintained its customers’ service whilst intensifying the on-going cable quality monitoring.
